Quality standards

Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd has been registered to the ISO 9001 standard for quality through the British Standards Institute (BSI), which is an independent assessor, since the early 1990s and has gone from strength to strength with this association.

BSI British Standards is the national standards body of the UK, with a globally recognised reputation for independence, integrity and innovation in the production of standards that promote best practice.

We believe that our customers are becoming more sophisticated, better informed and their expectations are growing. The only way to keep up is to offer a commitment to quality by providing a quality management system such as ISO 9001.

What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 is the internationally recognised standard for the quality management of businesses. It applies to the processes that create and control the products and services an organisation supplies.

It prescribes systematic control of activities to ensure that the needs and expectations of customers are met. It is designed and intended to apply to virtually any product or service made by any process anywhere in the world.

ISO 9001 is maintained by ISO, the international organisation for standardisation and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. Some of the requirements in ISO 9001 include:

  • a set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business;
  • monitoring processes to ensure they are effective;
  • keeping adequate records;
  • checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary;
  • regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness; and
  • facilitating continual improvement

ISO 9001 is by far the world’s most established quality framework, currently being used by around 897,000 organisations in 170 countries worldwide, and sets the standard not only for quality management systems, but management systems in general.

USS strives continually to ensure that the service provided to all institutions and members is of a high standard. To this end, target service levels are set on all aspects of the pensions operations department's service.

Please let us know of any aspects of our systems or procedures that you believe need to be improved.  Your views and suggestions are most welcome and you can get in touch with the quality facilitator by clicking here.
