Joining USS?
If you join a university, college or other USS employer (to see full list click here) in a role that qualifies for USS membership, you will automatically enter the scheme.
Click here for the new factsheet '5 Good Reasons to be a Member of USS'.
There are two sections of USS, the Final Salary section and the Career Revalued Benefits section.
You will be a member of the Final Salary section if you have been a member of USS continuously since before 1 October 2011.
You will be a member of the Career Revalued Benefits section if you join after 1 October 2011. If you join or rejoin after 30 September 2011 you may still be eligible for the Final Salary section in certain circumstances, summarised as follows:-
- You left before 1 October 2011 and rejoin before 1 April 2014, or
- You leave after 1 October 2011 and rejoin within 30 months
In each case, to qualify, you must have left your past benefits within the scheme and neither transferred them to another pension arrangement, nor received a refund of your contributions.
Please click here for more information on which section of the scheme you are eligible for.
Your employer will confirm which section you are eligible for and will issue you with a membership certificate.
