This basic calculator will show you how much membership of USS costs on a monthly basis. It also shows you how your national insurance contributions are reduced and the amount of tax relief you receive as a member of USS.
As a first step you need to select whether or not you are part of your employer’s salary sacrifice arrangement for pension contributions. You employer might call it something like ‘salary exchange’ or ‘pension plus’, if you’re not sure then please check with your employer.
Then, on the graph below, move the bottom slider along to adjust the salary. The first column displays the amount shown on your pay slip (or the amount paid no your behalf by your employer if you participate in a salary sacrifice arrangement) and the final column shows the real cost to you in your take home pay of being a member of USS.
Please note the following:
The calculator is intended as a general guide only. It should not be used for financial planning for retirement purposes. If you would like specific guidance, please speak to the pension contact at your institution.
If you are experiencing technical problems with the calculator please see our help page or contact our webmaster if you cannot find the solution. The most common problem is that you do not have Flash installed (the software used to make the modeller work). To download Flash please click here http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Rates of tax and national insurance used are for the tax year 2012/13.
