2006 RI Review
USS regularly reviews its policy on responsible investment (RI) and updated its RI strategy towards the end of 2006, following a consultation, led by an independent consultant. The review took insights from internal and external stakeholders, including a group which represented the views of some of the fund’s members. The major findings of the review can be summarised as follows:
- The market wide activities of the fund were considered a great success;
- More resources needed to be assigned to engagement with companies; and
- Particular focus and resource needed to be allocated to the integration of these issues into investment decision-making processes within the fund’s internal asset manager (the London Investment Office – LIO).
Based on this consultation, and the views of internal staff, an updated RI strategy was developed. The resulting strategy focuses particularly on reinforcing the funds commitment in the two areas identified as requiring additional resources: integration and engagement. These two, along with a third area (market wide engagement with regulators and other market players), represent the core areas of RI activity for USS.
