Consultation commences on proposed changes to USS

A period of consultation on proposed changes to USS formally commenced on Wednesday 20 October 2010.  The consultation, which will last for a minimum of 60 days in accordance with the statutory rules, will be undertaken with affected members and their representatives.

Following a decision of the Joint Negotiating Committee on 7 July 2010 to recommend a package of proposed changes to USS, a recommendation subsequently agreed by the USS trustee board, the scheme’s participating employers are required to provide information and consult on the proposed changes in accordance with the statutory regulations.

Information about the proposed changes has been provided to affected members and their representatives. This is now followed by a consultation to seek their views and comments. The consultation must last for a minimum of 60 days and, after allowing for a slightly longer response period than the minimum, is due to close on Wednesday 22 December 2010.

The responses received by employers from affected members and their representatives will be forwarded to the trustee company, and it will consider the comments and views in their entirety before deciding whether or not to make the proposed changes.

A consultation website has been created for members and employers, to provide detailed information on the changes and to allow affected members to respond – on a secure and anonymous basis – with their views and comments on the changes.

The information and consultation process is a large scale activity, covering over 150,000 affected members and approximately 370 participating institutions.
