USS is the pension scheme itself. It’s set up under a trust and has rules that set out what benefits and contributions are payable, and how the scheme is to be administered. Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited – that’s us – is the corporate trustee that runs and manages USS under these rules.

A deficit does not mean that benefits won’t be paid: defined benefits already built up in the old final salary and career revalued benefits sections of the scheme and, since 1 April 2016, in the Retirement Income Builder, are protected by law and in the Scheme Rules.

The JNC has recommended to the trustee a modification to the benefit changes it proposed in August 2021.
