Employer and member contributions are invested to fund future pensions. The level of investment return we can reasonably expect from them in future has a strong influence on the ability to fund pension promises already made and whether a given level of pension can continue to be offered without jeopardising the sustainability of the scheme.

Our valuation for 2020 will be based on a 'snapshot' of the Scheme on 31 March 2020. However, the process itself will run well into 2021. By law, we must complete it within 15 months - so by 30 June 2021. There are a number of milestones we need to reach on the way, set out in this timeline.

USS is the pension scheme itself. It’s set up under a trust and has rules that set out what benefits and contributions are payable, and how the scheme is to be administered. Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited – that’s us – is the corporate trustee that runs and manages USS under these rules.

This will depend on a number of things, such as the rate of income tax you pay, any tax relief to which you’re entitled and whether you’ve exceeded the Annual Allowance.

We use a variety of engagement methods, including meeting individually with the company or entity, collaboratively engaging alongside other investors, co-filing, or submitting shareholder resolutions or proposals, publicly engaging the entity, voting, and divesting or implementing an exit strategy.
