The Responsible Investment Team is responsible for implementing the fund's responsible investment strategy.

David Russell

Head of Responsible Investment

David is responsible for managing a team of five responsible investment professionals and implementing the trustee’s responsible investment strategy which focuses on integrating extra-financial factors into the investment processes across all asset classes and engaging with companies, and other assets, where responsible investment matters pose a risk to the fund’s investments. David joined USS in 2001.

David is a former board member of the PRI Association and is an advisor to the board of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), which USS set up in 2001. He is also on the Board of the International Centre for Pensions Management, a member of the FTSE Environmental Markets Advisory Committee, and on the PRI Private Equity Advisory Committee. David has previously worked as an Environmental Manager for a UK retail company, and was for five years a university lecturer in Environmental Management. He has a Masters Degree in Environmental Impact Assessment.

Helen Hopkins

RI Advisor

Helen joined USS in 2007 with eight years’ experience in RI. She previously worked at the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) in a range of roles, including secretariat for institutional investor collaborative initiatives such as the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) and Ethical Investment Association for independent financial advisors. Prior to UKSIF, Helen worked at a financial adviser’s and at Prudential. She has a BSc in Geography from Newcastle and holds the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Certificate in Financial Planning.

Peter Lunt

RI Senior Analyst

Peter joined the Responsible Investment team at USS in November 2015 to focus primarily on the integration of Governance issues into investment decisions and corporate engagement activities.

Prior to joining USS, Peter held a number of positions within superannuation funds in Australia, including VicSuper where he was employed as Portfolio Manager Equities and Manager Sustainability Investments. He was also nominee director on the Board of Regnan Governance Research and Engagement Pty Ltd. Prior to VicSuper, Peter was an ESG analyst at the Sustainable Investment Research Institute, following a career in forest management in Australia. Peter has undergraduate degrees in economics and science (forestry) and postgraduate degrees in finance and sustainability. He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the FINSIA.

Patrick O'Hara

RI Analyst

Patrick joined the Responsible Investment team at USS at the beginning of 2014 to work on the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues into investment decisions and corporate engagement activities.

Prior to joining USS Patrick worked for Aviva Investors where he was employed as an ESG Analyst in the Global Responsible Investment Team. Patrick is currently studying towards an MSc in Sustainable Development at Surrey University and is IMC qualified. He has previously worked for the FSA (now FCA) as a supervisor and the London Stock Exchange in the market compliance team.

Sandrine Lalmant

RI Analyst

Sandrine has six years of experience in responsible investment. She joined the Responsible Investment team at USS in September 2017 to work on the integration of governance issues into investment decisions and corporate engagement activities.

Prior to joining USS, Sandrine worked for a consulting firm. She advised the board members and senior managers of large banks on how to improve their governance practices. She also assessed the governance practices of development finance institutions’ portfolio companies. She previously worked for a proxy advisor and for an investment fund. Sandrine has two master degrees in Management from CEMS and Louvain School of Management. She has a BSc in Economics from the Universite Catholique de Louvain
