Group executive

The board of Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd is supported by a number of executives of the trustee company. Below are details of the trustee company senior executives.

Bill Galvin

Chief Executive

Bill was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer in August 2013. Before joining USS, Bill was CEO at the pensions regulator (tPR) for three years, and prior to that was executive director for strategy at tPR. Bill has also worked at Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) where he was responsible for the policy framework governing private pension protection through the period of establishment of tPR and the Pension Protection Fund.

Simon Pilcher

Chief Executive (USS Investment Management Ltd)

Simon was appointed Chief Executive of the wholly-owned investment management subsidiary of USS Ltd (USS Investment Management Ltd) in October 2019. He started his career in asset management in 1987 at Morgan Grenfell before moving to Prudential in 1998, a year before it acquired M&G Investments. At M&G Prudential, he led the Fixed Income and Alternatives businesses for two decades before being asked to become Chairman of Real Estate with a combined team of over 500 employees and around £160 bn in assets. He was also a member of the Executive Leadership Team. During his tenure at M&G Prudential, Simon championed innovation and pioneered new products in Europe, for example: Leveraged Finance, Infrastructure Private Equity, Commercial Mortgage Lending and, more recently, Specialty Finance and Impact Investing. He has a degree from Cambridge University.

Howard Brindle

Chief Operating Officer

Howard was appointed Chief Operating Officer for USS Investment Management Ltd in March 2012. Howard was previously head of JPMorgan’s European Transfer Agency Product and Chief Administration Officer for Lehman Brothers Asset Management Europe. Howard has BA Physics degree from Oxford University.

Guy Coughlan

Chief Risk Officer

Guy joined USS from Pacific Global Advisors where he was Chief Risk and Analytics Officer. Guy has also held several senior risk roles at JP Morgan, where he spent 17 years and finished as Head of the Pension Advisory Group in Europe.

Kevin Purcell

Chief People Officer

Kevin joined USS in October 2018 and has over 25 year’s international business, change management and Executive Human Resources experience in a variety of blue chip financial services companies including: Hudson Advisors, Barclays, UBS and Credit Suisse. He started his career as an Information Technology manager at the Portland Hospital in London prior to moving into Human Resources.

Kevin has a Bachelor of Business Studies degree from Trinity College Dublin.

Jeremy Hill

Group General Counsel

Jeremy rejoined USS as Group General Counsel in August 2014. Jeremy first worked at USS between 2009 and 2011 as general counsel for the investment management function. His previous roles have included responsibility for various areas of the legal coverage for the EMEA business at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, vice president at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and legal advisor at the London Stock Exchange. Jeremy was General Counsel and a main board director at Martin Currie Investment Management.

Dominic Gibb

Group Chief Financial Officer

Dominic was appointed Group Chief Financial Officer in December 2017. Prior to USS he worked as a Managing Director at Lehman Brothers on their insolvency; he was previously EMEA Financial Controller, EMEA Mortgage Division CFO and EMEA Head of Expense Management & Procurement. Before Lehman Brothers he held various divisional and group CFO roles at Genesis Housing Group, Balfour Beatty plc and Unilabs SA.

Helen McEwan

Chief Pension Officer

Helen has a wealth of experience in pensions and life assurance with particular expertise in strategy, leadership and distribution partnerships. Helen had a long career with Aegon UK, where her roles included Director of Banks, Partnerships Director and Head of International Sales.

Subsequent to Aegon, Helen has held executive roles with Fintech Adviser firm, True Potential as Commercial Director and as Business Development Director with DC Master Trust, Now Pensions. She has also been a Non-Executive Director with The Exeter since September 2016 and Exeter Nomination Committee Chair since September 2018.

Helen’s remit as Chief Pensions Officer includes Strategy, Proposition Development, Service Enhancement, Business Change and Digital Transformation.
