Professor Sir David Eastwood

Professor Sir David Eastwood became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham in April 2009. Former posts include Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Vice-Chancellor of the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Chief Executive of the Arts and Humanities Research Board. Before that he held a Chair in Modern History at the University of Wales Swansea, where he was also Head of Department, Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor. He was a Fellow and Senior Tutor of Pembroke College (1988-95), and is an Honorary Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford, from where he graduated in 1980, and of Keble College, Oxford from 2006. He became a Director of USS in 2007.

Dr Kevin Carter

Kevin Carter is chairman of Murray International Trust PLC and a nonexecutive director of Lowland Investment Company PLC. He is a trustee director of the BBC Pension Trust Limited and chairman of its investment committee and a Director of the Centrica Combined Common Investment Fund. He is also Chairman of Hermes GPW LLP, a private markets asset manager.

He was Chief Executive of Old Mutual Asset Managers (UK) Limited from 1987 to 2000 and Chief Executive of Old Mutual Asset Managers (US) LLC from 2000 to 2001. He then became a senior investment consultant and ultimately European Head of Investment Practice at Watson Wyatt. Subsequently he joined JP Morgan in London as a Managing Director and Head of the EMEA Pension Advisory Group.

Dave Guppy

Dave Guppy was appointed in October 2017. Now retired, he worked in the computing service at University College London from 1979 to 2009. Prior to that he worked in similar roles at the London Hospital Medical College, a software cooperative and IBM.

He was President of University College London Association of University Teachers from 2002 to 2004 and served as Vice-Chair of the national AUT Computer Staffs Committee from 1998 to 2003. He is also a member of the UCU Superannuation Working Group.

He was a member of the National Executive Committee of the University and College Union and previously held the position of UCU appointed Director of USS from 2005 to 2011.

Professor Stuart Palmer

Professor Stuart Palmer is Chair of Council at the University of Cardiff, and is also a trustee of the Cardiff University Pension Fund, and is Chair of trustees at the University of Warwick Pension Fund. He is also a member of the HEFCE Financial Sustainability Strategy Group and sits on the Board of the Mercia Seed Corn Fund.

Professor Palmer was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick and holds a BSc, PhD and DSc in Physics from the University of Sheffield and Honorary DSc from the University of Warwick. He is also currently Emeritus Professor at the University of Warwick and Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology.

Professor Palmer was appointed to the trustee board on 1 April 2016.

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath in 2001 having been previously been Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Head of the School of Human Sciences at the University of Surrey.

Dame Glynis took her PhD in Psychology from the University of Bristol and DSc from the University of Oxford where she held a Prize Fellowship at Nuffield College. Dame Glynis is an honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. In 2012 Dame Glynis was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queens' New Year Honours for services to higher education and in 2014 she was named in the Science Council's list of '100 leading UK practising scientists'.

Dame Glynis is a director of the Student Loans Company and Universities UK. She is also Director of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and a Council Member of the Economic & Social Research Council. She became a director of USS in 2009.

Kirsten English

Kirsten English holds several non-executive directorships including Tyman PLC and Innovate Finance (the UK Financial Technology Industry Association). She currently works as Executive Chair of Style Research, a leading provider of portfolio analysis software and research. She has previously held a variety of positions including Director at Terra Firma Capital Partners, CEO at Grenfell PAI (Alternative Investments) and Entrepreneur in Residence at Warburg Pincus. Kirsten was co-founder and General Manager at Radianz, which sold to BT in 2005 and worked at Reuters for over a decade. Kirsten is a graduate of St Anne's College, Oxford and the Wharton Business School Executive Program and speaks fluent Norwegian.

Kirsten English joined the trustee board on 1 May 2014.

Professor Jane Hutton

Professor Hutton was appointed in November 2015. She studied at the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge and London; her PhD is from Imperial College. She has been a professor of statistics at the University of Warwick since 2004.

She is a Chartered Statistician, a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, an elected Fellow of the International Statistical Institute, and holds a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit award.

Her statistical research, in survival analysis, meta-analysis and non-random data, has had impacts on clinical guidelines and in legal cases in several countries. She has also written extensively on ethics and philosophy of statistics in health care. She has a strong commitment to graduate statistical education in developing countries.

Ian Maybury

Ian Maybury joined Schroders in 2012 as the Head of Solution Management and has previously worked for Redington, Citigroup and Royal London Insurance in various actuarial and management roles. He currently combines a part time advisory role at Schroders with a portfolio of trustee, investment committee, non-executive and advisory or consultancy roles.

An experienced executive with particular expertise in investment and risk management, he has occupied a number of key trustee positions for much of his career. He took on a DC Committee role for the Unilever UK Pension Scheme in March 2013, in addition to becoming a trustee for Royal National Institute for Blind People in October 2013. He has a keen interest in the governance of DB and DC pension schemes as well as financial services and pension regulation.

Michael Merton

An alumnus of the Senior Management Development programme at Harvard University and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, Michael Merton worked for Rio Tinto from 1976 – 2009. He was formerly the Group Financial Controller and Member of the Executive Committee and held the position of CEO for Lihir Gold, a Rio Tinto managed operation based in Papua New Guinea and Australia, between 1997 and 2000. He fulfilled the role of CFO for some of the firm's operations in the UK, France and the USA between 1984 and 1997, and became Head of Global Business Services in 2005. Michael now acts as Chairman of the J Sainsbury Pension Scheme and its investment committee, is a trustee of the HALO Trust and serves on the boards of Cape PLC and BlackRock Commodities Income Investment Trust Plc. He became a director and chair of the audit committee of USS in February 2014.

Professor Anton Muscatelli

Anton Muscatelli became Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow on 1 October 2009. He studied at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated with an MA in Political Economy and with a PhD in Economics. He was a lecturer in Economics from 1984 and Daniel Jack Professor of Economics from 1992 until 2007. He was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, 2000 to 2004, and Vice-Principal (Strategy, Budgeting and Advancement) from 2004 until 2007. He was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University from 2007 to 2009.

Rene Poisson

Rene Poisson became a director of USS in November 2012 having retired after a 30 year career with JP Morgan latterly as Managing Director and Senior Credit Officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Over the last 15 years he has been a trustee of JP Morgan's London Office Retirement Plan and is currently chair of the board and investment sub-committee of JP Morgan's UK Pension Plan. He is also chair of the advisory committee for Rothschild and of the Independent Governance Committee of Standard Life Assurance PLC and director of the Standard Life Master Trust. Rene is a director and chair of the remuneration committee of Stemcor as well as a patron of the Disability Challengers Charity.

Will Spinks

Will Spinks was appointed in September 2018. He has worked in higher education since 2007, initially as the first Chief Operating Officer at Loughborough University and subsequently as the Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer at the University of Manchester.

Before moving into the Higher Education sector, Will pursued a career in ICI, Zeneca and AstraZeneca working in a number of businesses and functions in both the UK and USA. This culminated in him establishing and leading a Business Services organisation providing services to all AstraZeneca's UK sites. From 2001-2007, he also acted as Site Manager at AstraZeneca's then largest R&D site globally, Alderley Park.

He is formerly a Director of AstraZeneca Pensions Trustee Limited and a UUK-nominated member of USS' Joint Negotiating Committee.

Will's other activities include acting as Chair and Trustee Director of a number of charitable community groups, including the East Cheshire Hospice.

Dr Steve Wharton

Dr Steve Wharton was appointed in September 2016. He is a Senior Lecturer in French and Communication at the University of Bath. His research interests include contemporary LGBTIQ activism from a comparative Franco-British perspective, political communication, and contemporary French politics, culture and society. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, he is Chair of Directors of Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, and Honorary Vice Secretary of the Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France having previously served as both its Treasurer and Honorary Secretary twice in each office. He is Co-Director of Routes into Languages South West, promoting the uptake of modern foreign languages in state schools.

The last national President of AUT and first (joint) President of UCU, he served as a member of the USS's Advisory Committee for three years.

In 2012 the French government made him Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques for services to French culture.
