USS announces new board appointment

Marian ElliottMarian Elliott will join the USS Board as an independent non-executive director on 1 September 2021.

Marian brings 20 years’ experience in advising trustees and corporate clients, in both the public and private sectors. She has particular expertise in developing actuarial and investment strategies, risk management and sustainability.

Currently Global Head of Pensions at GFG Alliance, Marian was previously a Managing Director at Redington and prior to that led Deloitte’s Trustee Advisory practice in London. She was awarded the title of Professional Pensions’ Advisor of the Year in 2019.

Marian is a Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries and has served two terms on their governing Council, as well as sitting on their Management Board. She is a current member of the Pensions Board and works with the Sustainability Board’s education team. As part of her work on the Pensions Board, she has been involved with pensions policy development and implementation, including how to incorporate the issues associated with open and multi-employer schemes within the regulatory framework.

Marian said: “USS is one of the biggest private pension schemes in the UK and, as a hybrid DB/DC multi-employer scheme still open to new members and future accrual, it is also one of the rarest, most complex and interesting.

“I am delighted to be joining such a strong board and look forward to working with my new colleagues to continue its vitally important work.”

Marian joins the board as Dr Kevin Carter’s term comes to an end.

Dame Kate Barker, Chair of the USS Board, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Marian on to the board. Her experience and expertise will be hugely beneficial to our work.

“USS is very grateful for Kevin’s invaluable contribution to the scheme over the past nine years. He has been a very insightful Chair of the Investment Committee and a supportive Deputy Chair.”
