The challenges facing Thames Water are the manifestation of historic under-investment over multiple decades and, more recently, the significant financial impact of soaring energy prices and other inflationary cost pressures. USS has today launched a consultation with Universities UK (UUK) on the trustee’s proposed funding assumptions and methodology for the scheme’s 2023 actuarial valuation and on the Statement of Funding Principles.

Universities Superannuation Scheme has published its annual Report and Accounts, covering the financial year to 31 March 2022. At 31 March 2022, total assets under management were £90.8bn (2021: £82.2bn). Its defined benefit (DB) fund stood at £88.9bn (2021: £80.6bn), while its defined contribution (DC) assets totalled £1.9bn (2021: £1.6bn).

A deficit is the difference between the amount of assets held (allowing for expected investment returns on assets held now and in the future) and the amount of money estimated to be needed to pay the pensions built up.

After six months of extended negotiations, USS’s Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) has now determined how the funding challenges facing the Scheme should be addressed. This comes almost two years after we first committed to holding a 2020 valuation.
